Lighting Addintional Ner for Shamash

Question:

The Remo 673 seems to hold (see M’B s`k 19) that ideally one should davka use the shamesh for lighting the menorah, and not an additional candle. How do we fulfill this nowadays with our oil menorahs, when we light with a candle and light an additional oil shamesh ?

Answer:

While the Rama recommends not lighting an additional light at all, the purpose of this is to create a היכר as to which night it is. Most accomplish this by lighting the additional light at a noticeably different height than the other neiros. There are some who do place a large wax candle in the place of the Shammos and in fact do not light an additional oil ner, in line with the Rama.
