Kriyas Shema During White Nights

Question:
Shalom! In time of white nights in St. Petersburg when to recite kriyas shma? Gra, 72 min or chatzos?

Answer:

Waiting 72 minutes which is the shiur of Tzeis Hakochavim according to the stringent view of Rabbeinu Tam would be sufficient to fulfill the mitzvah Kriyas Shema.

Being that we do not have the indicator of Tzeis Hakochavim – the emergence of three stars, we can rely on the set time of 72 minutes. In addition the Gemara tells us the time for Kriyas Shema is בשכבך ובקומך at the time of arising and of going to sleep. Certainly the middle of the night is well past the standard time of going to sleep, so the standard zman Rabeinu Tam should be used.
